Glossary FAQs

Revive

Revive is a manufacturer of water radiator that is available in a wide range of styles, colours and designs.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas, that is odourless and cannot be detected by human senses making it a potentially lethal substance when concentrated in the home. There are many causes of carbon monoxide, but in the home, poorly installed, maintained central heating systems can be the cause of accidental exposure. Poor ventilation in the home, or blocked flues and chimneys can also cause a build-up of carbon monoxide. Proper maintenance of heating system can prevent issues with carbon monoxide, and it is also a good idea to install carbon monoxide detectors and alarms to alert you to any build up of carbon monoxide in the home.

Insulation

Insulation is a product that is designed to reduce heat transfer from one material to another. The reduction in thermal energy loss means that less energy is wasted and in turn money is saved on your energy bills. Insulation can take many forms, from wall insulation to roof insulation. In terms of central heating systems, it is commonly found as pipe ‘lagging’, where insulation is wrapped around pipes to help retain heat and minimise heat-loss.

Double Glazing

Double glazing is a style of window that uses two sheets of glass, with gas or a vacuum between the glass to help reduce heating loss through conduction. Today, it is even possible to buy triple glazing which works on the same principle as double glazing. This style of window glazing is advantageous since it can help reduce heat wastage in the home and in turn save you money since your central heating does not need to run as much.

Towel Rail

A towel rail or towel radiator, is simply a rail that is designed to place towels on it, to help them dry. A towel rail can be heated, either via electricity or like a traditional water radiator, that is connected to a central heating system. A heated towel rail is the perfect addition to a bathroom, to firstly help heat the room, and secondarily as a practical addition to help dry towels.

Condemned

When your boiler or central heating system has been condemned, by a boiler inspector or central heating engineer it means that the boiler has been deemed unsafe for operation and should not be used. In some cases a boiler or central heating system can be repaired, in other cases components or even the whole system will need to be replaced. In either case it is important that you respect the decision of condemnation and ensure that the device is not used again until the issues are resolved.

Tails

A radiator valve tail is a device that is attached to the bottom radiator tapping and connects the radiator to the radiator valve. In some cases, a valve tail extension is required to fit a valve to a radiator, depending on the gap that needs to be bridged.

Towel Radiator
Designer Radiator

The only difference between a designer radiator and a traditional radiator is that the design may be more appealing and can potentially fit in with the overall style and design of your home. Whilst traditional radiators are perfectly fine and are very functional items, a designer radiator might be preferred in room where the overall look and design might be considered more important. Designer radiators can come in a range of different shapes, styles, sizes and even colours.

Pump (Central Heating)

A central heating pump is a device that connects to a boiler and pumps hot water around a central heating system. The way a central heating pump works is that it helps move water from the boiler and it pumps it through the radiators in the home, in turn, heating the home, and then, the water is then pumped back to the boiler where the water in the system is re-heated, thus completing the circuit.

Immersion (heater)

An immersion heater is a device that is used to heat water. In terms of traditional central heating systems, the immersion heater is contained separately to the boiler and is used to heat water separately from the boiler of the central heating system. One advantage this older system has over a newer combi-boiler is that if the central heating system break downs the home owner will still be able to get hot water.

Pressure

Pressure is an exertion force that is found in central heating systems. Pressure helps circulate the hot water around the central heating system, without adequate pressure then the central heating system will not work correctly. The normal operating water pressure for the central heating system is between 1.0 and 2.0 bar and most modern boilers will feature a pressure gauge so that a user can see what the current operating pressure is. When pressure drops below the standard operation level the central heating system may need to be re-pressurised.

Recovery (heat)

Heat recovery is the process where a device called a heat exchanger is used to ventilate a building and remove stale air from the rooms. These devices tend to work best in buildings which are air tight. Buildings which are not completely air tight will not work with heat exchangers efficiently.

Thermostat

A thermostat is used in a central heating system to control the temperature of the heating and / or hot water in the home. Typically, a thermostat, or heating controls are user-adjustable meaning that the desired temperature can be set as required.

Y Plan

A Y Plan central heating system has been designed to provide independent temperature settings for both the central heating system and the hot water system.

Convection

Convection (heating) is a type of heating device. Air becomes heated when it passes over the hot surface of the heating device. Panel heaters, fan heaters and old heaters can all be types of convection heaters.

Cylinder

A cylinder, or storage tank is used in a central heating system to contain water. A cylinder can contain either hot or cold water.

Condensation

Condensation is when water forms as droplets on cold services, after it has come in contact with hot air. Condensation can occur when there is too much humidity in the home, and can typically happen in the winter months. There are a number of ways to deal with condensation, such as using a dehumidifier to control the humidity in the home.

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC)

HVAC systems control the temperature and environment of a building including humidity, air flow and air filtering. These systems are more likely found in commercial buildings, or potentially in residential apartments where the central heating and environment systems is handled centrally.
