The Power of Yellow

We tend to have a day to celebrate everything these days and the colour yellow is no exception. Today (25th May), somewhere in the world, the colour yellow has its day and what a colour it is. Here at Column Rads, we love yellow and it's one of our most popular coloured rads. It’s bright and bold and can be a very playful colour, but did you know it is also the colour of the mind and intelligence? A colour can say a lot about a person and when used incorrectly, can really impact our daily lives. Yellow can make or break a mood depending on how it's used. So, we are going to take a deeper look at the power of yellow and how you can be using it at home to boost your creativity and logical thinking.

The Ancient History of Yellow

Did you know that the colour yellow has a wide and varied history? It can be traced back as far as the late stone age. Yellow ochre was one of the first colours used and evidence of this can be seen in the caves of Lascaux in the south of France. Here you'll find the stunning cave art which was created by Neanderthal Man over 17,000 years ago. For the ancient Egyptians, it was used to represent gold, the colour of the sun and also symbolised eternity and immortality. The power of yellow signified wealth and luxury as it was directly linked to the gods. The more yellow and gold items you owned, the closer to the gods you were and we all know the Pharaohs loved that.

Yellow in a Art.

Yellow began to be used to signify betrayal, envy and jealously during the post-classical period when it was used to portray Judas Iscariot. As you may know, in the Bible, Judas betrayed Jesus and so Judas is often depicted as wearing a yellow toga. In the 16th century in Spain, heretics appeared to wear a yellow cape. Throughout history, artists have used the colour yellow to play with light in their paintings. Van Gogh often referred to the beauty of the colour and we know how much he loved yellow.   Sunshine, a light which, for want of a better word I can only call yellow—pale sulphur yellow, pale lemon, gold. How beautiful yellow is!” —Vincent Van Gogh, wrote to his sister in 1888.

Yellow in a Modern World

Then, in 18th and 19th century, with the introduction of synthetic pigments and dyes, yellow was now easily reproduced for a fraction of the cost. More recently, yellow is used due to its high visibility and began to be used in traffic warnings and for emergency vehicles.  Yellow has also seen a bit of a revival in the interior world. Yellow is being paired with grey to make a bold statement in the home. It’s being used to brighten the dull greys and add pops of sunny, happy colour to an otherwise dull and dreary grey. Much like it does here in the UK during spring. Think grey skies and yellow daffodils and how happy it makes you feel after a long winter.

How Much Yellow is too Much Yellow?

The key to adding yellow to your home is to keep it minimal. You’ll need a soft and somewhat neutral colour to offset the yellow. That is why grey works so well. You can really brighten up a dark grey nicely if you add a few elements in yellow. The darker the grey, the more the yellow will pop. If you’re feeling bold and want to add a feature wall in yellow, experiment with colour blocking instead of painting the whole wall. Alternatively, try a simple but effective floral wall paper with yellow flowers to break it up a bit. Throw in some cushions and blankets or a rug and you can really splash that yellow about a bit. Also, by adding these accessories, you can easily remove or change them up if you are finding the yellow a little over powering.
